Least Favorite Concerts

  1. Run DMC, Belly Up Tavern, Solano Beach, 1999 (only a fifteen minute set, the first ten of which we missed)
  2. Bootsy Collins not showing up for several concerts
  3. The Who, Oakland Coliseum, 1988 (we were so far away that we had trouble seeing the huge video screen)
  4. Roam, San Diego, 1994 (rhythm guitarist of largely lesbian B-52s-inspired band, who lacked rhythm, developed crush on me and became low-level stalker)
  5. The Cult, Cow Palace, San Francisco, 1989 (spent entire show worried that this big redhead named Norman would kill me)
  6. Pearl Jam, San Diego, 1994 (had six people smashed into three theater seats)
  7. Living Color and Primus, UCSD, 1989 (too much bass, plus I bought a concert shirt for my youngest brother that apparently smelled of hashish and my father accused said brother of smoking marijuana either in cigarette or pipe form)
  8. No Doubt, The Fillmore, 1998 (showed up late with the tickets, which meant Martell missed Goldfinger; no longer in No Doubt’s demographic)
  9. De La Soul, San Diego, 1992 (should have been great show, but De La’s equipment kept breaking, which was par for the course before hip hop broke through after The Chronic)
  10. Allman Brothers, Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, 1997 (a guy that I’ll call “Rik” got us free backstage passes; didn’t care too much about the Allman Brothers, so Martell and I played foosball in the dark backstage)
  11. San Diego Street Scene, 2002 (James Brown showed up late and we had to leave to catch the trolley; P-Funk too drugged out; Lynn and Jeff too old)
  12. Steely Dan, Concord, 2000 or so (Steely Dan was fine, but got sick of watching a woman in front of us dance off-beat for the entire show)
  13. Rush and Mr. Big, San Diego Sports Center, 1992 (not a horrible show, but seats were far away and I just wasn’t into bass jams that evening)
  14. Mr. Bungle, Triton Pub, San Diego, 1990 (didn’t get into the concert; when I tried to leave the parking lot, I bottomed out my car and had to get some people to help me pick it up)
  15. Smashing Pumpkins, John Lee Hooker, Beastie Boys, Beck, and Biz Markie at Free Tibet Concert, San Francisco, 1998 (the Smashing Pumpkins incited a riot in which a fat punk punched a bunch of little girls, then got his head kicked in by about twenty skate rats; the sound man didn’t turn on John Lee Hooker’s mike; the Beastie Boys were so-so, we missed Beck, and Biz Markie was too tired to stand up)
