Quaint Old English Customs #4: Football
on a Saturday
In the U.S., the idea of Saturday football evokes images of collegiate rivalries, school colors and tailgate parties. Where Ian's from, though, it's all about the pros. At least both traditions have one thing in common—massive beer consumption. Read more.
Rant and Rave: Rant—Philip Rivers, starting QB of the San Diego Chargers —The Chargers just had a key victory this past weekend over the Baltimore Ravens, with quarterback Philip Rivers throwing three touchdowns and playing an overall solid game. And I'm completely sick of him. What's my problem with a Pro-Bowl QB that just led his team to a 14-2 record last year? First off, his Pro Bowl selection was a sham, more a result of the team's dominance than his performance, so that title has no value in my book. He was inconsistent last year and is even worse this year. Second, he has the reigning MVP playing running back for him, yet he can't seem to get him the ball more than 15-20 times per game. Yes, I know, he's not the one calling the plays, but you would think he would have some sort of influence over that, being the starting QB and all. But the biggest problem is his attitude. Rivers acts like he's the most important person on the field and seems offended when he's not treated with the proper respect. It's high time he realized that respect is something that is earned, not delivered on order. And berating one's teammates and yelling back at the fans is no way to go about achieving that. |
